FIA's Active Aero Zone U-Turn: Teams Revolt Over "Changing Goalposts at Halftime" Chaos Before Australian GP Qualifying

Governing Body Forced to Reverse Turn 8-9 Straight Mode Removal After Unified Driver and Team Pushback Hours Before FP3.

The FIA was forced into a dramatic U-turn Saturday morning when teams and drivers revolted against the governing body's decision to remove one of Albert Park's five active aero zones just hours before FP3—a controversy one team source compared to "changing the size of the goalposts at halftime."

The Race's investigation revealed that "teams were angered on Saturday morning when the FIA notified them just hours before final practice that it was going to remove the straight mode zone at the Australian Grand Prix venue that runs to the Turn 9 left-hand kink."

The FIA's initial decision stemmed from Friday night's drivers' briefing, where Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto raised safety concerns. According to The Race's sources, "Bortoleto said he could barely make it through that section flat-out when running alone so it could become a problem in the race when following other cars."

Active Aero Zone back and forth at AusGP 2026

FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis explained to Motorsport.com that "we are for the first time gaining detailed knowledge of the magnitude of downforce reduction, some teams are experiencing on the straight mode activation."

However, the removal's implications were catastrophic for teams. The Race detailed that losing the low-drag zone would force teams to "scrap a lot of the set-up work they have done with their cars so far," affecting energy deployment, tire pressures, ride heights, and plank wear risks.

Teams responded with unified resistance. Motorsport.com reported that "as well as teams individually lobbying the FIA, drivers came together to offer a unified response."

Within an hour, the FIA capitulated. Their official statement read: "Following the feedback received in the last hour from teams and drivers, and additional analysis contributed by teams, the decision to remove Straight Mode zone #4 for Albert Park is rescinded."

Tombazis acknowledged to Speedcafe that "some teams may argue it penalises those who have taken that factor into account, and that is true."

The controversy exposes fundamental issues with F1's 2026 active aero implementation and the FIA's preparedness for the new regulations' real-world challenges.

Australian GP qualifying begins at 4:00 PM local Melbourne time (5:00 AM GMT).

Ferrari's VSC Strategy Blunder Costs Leclerc Victory: "At Least One of Us Should Have Pitted" Fumes Hamilton

Scuderia's Refusal to Pit Under Lap 12 Virtual Safety Car Gifts Mercedes 12-Second Advantage and Ruins Podium Hopes. Ferrari threw away a genuine shot at victory in the Australian Grand Prix through a catastrophic strategy error, keeping both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton out during the lap 12 Virtual Safety Car that allowed Mercedes to pit both drivers and gain a decisive 12-second advantage. Leclerc had led the opening laps after a brilliant start from P4, passing both Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antonelli into Turn 1 to slot into second behind polesitter George Russell. Formula 1's race analysis confirmed Leclerc "led laps 3-11" after Russell pitted early, putting Ferrari in control of race strategy. However, when Hadjar's car stopped at Turn 4 triggering a Virtual Safety Car on lap 12, Ferrari made the baffling decision to keep both drivers out while Mercedes seized the opportunity to pit Russell and Antonelli under yellow flag conditions—gaining approximately...
